You’ve Got Mail
Now more than ever, what you say and how you say it reflects strongly on your personal brand — especially in a virtual-first world. Writing an incredibly crisp email is a boon for you because it communicates so many things: 1) your competency 2) your organization and 3) your trust. Emails are read in 2 minutes and usually on their smartphone, so they need to be treated with extra care. You can scale your influence quickly through email if you do it right. People will soon realize: “Wow, this person really *gets* it.
Hone your subject line to your outcome: Be clear on what you’re trying to achieve from this email. Is this just an FYI? A review? An action. Put that in brackets right before your SL: e.g. [Inform] [FYI] [Update] [Needs Review] [Action Needed]
Structure your emails with the ask first, context later. Your email is going to be read in 2 minutes. Many people (especially senior leaders) are constantly triaging their inbox. You want them to see your emails and feel calm, and not tense. How? Put exactly what you need a in bold: “My ask” or “Action”. And then give them the context or background after. They will always be able to read more, but let them know at the start of what you need (see example).
Bullet points are your friend. Make it easy with them by using bullets - which improve scannability and ensure the key points are being noticed
